Central Pontine Myelinolysis Associated With Severe Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Abstract
Severe hyperemesis gravidarum is a dangerous disease. It leads to esophageal rupture, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, renal and liver failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, neurologic disorders-central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) and Wernicke encephalopathy. CPM is a demyelinating disease of the pons often associated with demyelination of other areas of the central nervous system. There is still controversy over the pathogenesis of CPM, but it is widely regarded as being the result of rapid correction of hyponatremia and alcoholism. The clinical consequences of CPM vary considerably but pseudobulbar palsy and pyramidal tract signs along with depressed levels of consciousness are common manifestations. Recently we experienced central pontine myelinolysis associated with severe hyperemesis gravidarum. We report this case with reviewing of other literature.
